America's wealth more than doubled between 1920 and 1928, but from 1920-1930, America endured one of its largest economic peaks and troughs. This time period was a consumer based society where people from coast to coast bought the same goods due to nationwide advertising and chain stores, listened to the same music, had the same vocabulary, and danced in the same style. While many found this behavior and mass culture disappointing, others celebrated the birth of a new type of lifestyle.
